Travel Diary: Ilfracombe, Hidden Path to Happiness

Travel Diary: Ilfracombe, Hidden Path to Happiness

Walks on the beach or hiking across mountains are one of my favourite activities in the whole world. And that’s why I’d like to take you with me today and I hope we can get lost together in the beauty of the world we get to live in.

I went on a lovely holiday to Ilfracombe back in September, a small town hidden in North Devon. It was all I could wish for from a little gateway on the coast of the UK.

The house we were staying at, The Quarry House, had a little secret we discovered only after a few days of staying in it. It was a very well hidden secret that had the power to awake all your childhood fantasies.

…the top floor had a room and that room had a secret door…

Upon opening the secret door with a-not-so-secret-key (it was right there, in the keyhole) we found ourselves standing outside, on the middle of a hill, on a secret path leading right to the top of bare cliffs. With a bit of dedication we could walk along the coastline for hours.

It was early morning for us, we’d just finished our breakfast and this little hidden pathway was the challenge we needed.

We walked along the shore, up high so close to the sky, along stunning coastal paths, surrounded by friends. We were all so quiet, taking in the beauty around us. It was so peaceful that every now and then I felt like I was alone, lost in my thoughts.

We were the only maniacs walking along the cliffs so early in the morning, though we’ve picked a wonderful morning for a walk. The only noise we could hear were childish seagulls chasing each other and waves breaking on the rocks just below us. The power of their impact was both, scary and fascinating.

I loved it.

I loved the fact I could just get lost in my own mind, sort of float in my own head, choose what I want to think about and be my own boss. I wanted to relax on this holiday and I got more than I’d expected. I felt free and happy.

I clutched my camera in my hands, snapping away all the beauty, locking it forever in pixelated images that I’ll later hang around my house and every time I look at them my memories will tickle me with happiness and remind me of all those little things I have to treasure.

I was bubbling inside with enthusiasm, passion and peace.

This early morning walk was just the cherry on top of the cake after those magical few days in Ilfracombe. The sea sparkled with the sun’s reflection and it was so beautiful. My only wish was to see dolphins and whales.

Standing right there, on the top of the cliff, only then we can realise how small we are.

…and I loved every moment of it because I felt so alive.

Even though we were all walking together, in line like soldiers, we were all lost in our worlds, scared to speak up, to lose the moment.

I couldn’t remember the last time I had such a moment to myself and I don’t understand why – it’s just so rewarding, I had to kick myself for not trying harder and I can only recommend you try it. You don’t even have to travel far, nature is all around us, just find the one thing that you love the most and let it carry you away.

You can run away from people, hide in the cafe or a restaurant, have some nice food and a glass of wine and just enjoy life, living. Go to the cinema and then on the way home walk through the city.

What about you? When is the last time you got lost within you?
