Project Me Time: Learning To Live In The Moment

The question of the day. Why it’s so important to live in the moment…

I live pretty hectic live and with all honesty, I don’t know many (if any) people who don’t.

To live in the moment is very often explained as being conscious, aware of what is happening right now and being in the present with all of your senses. It also means not dwelling on the past, not being anxious and worrying about the future.

Now, whilst this sounds amazing, I don’t think it’s particularly great not to think about past or future. To me, past is there to teach us lessons and future is there to make plans and to look forward to. We have our day to day responsibilities and based on these we build our future. That’s why I have a section on this blog called “Project ME TIME” as I think it’s so important to look after your mental health.

So whilst I absolutely love the idea of living in the moment, I don’t preach it. However, I do believe it’s important not to get caught up in our responsibilities and enjoy life while we can. That’s why I’ve put together this simple guide, my top 5 tips, on how to learn to live in the moment, at least every now and then.

Friends & Family

I think it’s safe to say that none of the best moments in my life have been spent alone. So when you feel down, alone or sad, why don’t you arrange a coffee with your friends or invite your family over for a lunch? Instead of moping, get up and do something productive.

Stay away from technology

I mean…what?! This is not an easy one, is it! It actually might be the hardest thing to do, especially for us bloggers. We depend on technology and for many of us it’s our bread and butter.

Though, bear in mind that every moment can pass you by before you even have time to realise you’ve missed it. It’s good to switch off, pick up a book instead, go for a walk, look around, hug a tree (apparetnly they share their positive energy, have you ever done it?), enjoy a good cup of coffee – its taste, smell, the occasion.

Celebrate every single moment. Put away your phone, take a break from real life, even if it’s just for a few hours. You’ll feel amazing for it!

Don’t stress

Has this ever happened to you? You’re at work and all you do is think of your approaching holiday. And when you finally arrive at your holiday destination, you worry about the work piling up on our desks or the issues you haven’t had a chance to resolve. We dwell on invasive memories or fret about what may happen when we come back. I’ve decided to completely switch off on my holiday and apart from ONE message to work, I didn’t check my emails at all. This was a new one for me but I did come back from my holiday refreshed and ready to kick some ass. I’ve written a really good post (if I can say so myself) on how to fulfil your dreams, so give it a read!

So, when you’re meant to relax, relax, be it holiday or just home from work! How else you’re meant to recharge if you’re not even trying? Give yourself a chance.

Loosen Up

I’m a massive culprit of this one. I just over think every situation. I’m a stresser and sometimes I worry I enjoy it?!

Thinking too hard about what you’re doing can actually make things worse. And this one is important. Overthinking actually can even stand in the way of achieving your dreams.

If you’re in a situation that makes you anxious—giving a speech, presenting, meeting new people, dancing—focusing on your anxiety tends to heighten it. Take a deep breath, practise and go out. Step by step you can try yourself handle these situation, enjoy those moments and avoid stress.

Enjoy The Moment

We’ tend to get trapped in our thoughts, think too much about future or the past. More often than not, we forget to experience the presence, let alone enjoy it. Like many of  us, I too sip my daily cup of coffee and forget to enjoy it as I’m too busy sitting behind my desk dealing with emails. I decided to stop this and instead, relish in whatever I’m doing at the present moment. I have wonderful post written about my perfect weekend coffee morning, as coffee is more to me than just a drink. It’s a culture and i love everything about it.

It’s all those little things that help to make my life more enjoyable. I’ve learnt to savour that glass of wine on holiday, soaking in every moment just so I can remind myself the moment, how I felt, and the sound of sea, waves and wind.

I wouldn’t recommend living in the moment all the time as we do have to consider that our actions have consequences. As much as I hate to say, we do have our day to day responsibilities and without these our lives might crumble. However we do need to take a break, switch off and enjoy precious life more.

Look around, soak in all the beauty, enjoy every moment.

Everyone agrees it’s important to live in the moment, but the problem is how. Let’s all try and take more time to switch off, let loose and embrace every minute. Let’s live for the moment every now and then.

What are your top advices to enjoy moment? What do you do to recharge your batteries?
